From a One-Man Garage to a Multi-Plant Operation: The Prime Forest Products Story
In the world of wood products, longevity and adaptability are the true markers of success. Few exemplify this better than Brad Rodakowski, founder of Prime Forest Products. Brad started in the industry loading rail cars in the Puget Sound during the 1970s. Now, he oversees a thriving operation with over 50 employees. Resilience, relationships, and a deep respect for the people behind the process have defined Brad’s journey.
A Legacy Rooted in Timber
Brad’s entry into the industry was shaped by his father, who insisted that Brad, then 18, spend his summer working at a sawmill. Far from the comforts of home and his girlfriend, Brad learned the business from the ground up, loading rail cars and working the planer chain. The experience left a mark, sparking a lifelong appreciation for the grit and nuance of the lumber trade.
After earning a degree in marketing and business from Portland State, Brad worked swing shift at Oregon Canadian while attending college. His professional foundation took shape during a decade with Stimson Lumber Company, where he managed sales across multiple sawmills, learning log breakdown and grading, and helped launch international export programs to Australia and Italy. He eventually returned to Oregon Canadian, with new skills and a strong drive to build a book of business.
The Birth of Prime Forest Products
In 2012, Brad recognized it was time to carve out his path. Rather than risk damaging valued relationships, he approached trusted accounts to ensure they would support him if he went it alone. Their response was unequivocally unanimous: they’d follow him.
So Brad launched Prime Forest Products out of his garage with little more than a phone, a laptop, and those foundational relationships. From day one, the business focused on clear industrial lumber, a niche built on scarcity and trust. By the first month, Prime was already profitable. “We didn’t start with a commodity model,” Brad explained. “We built around industrial customers who needed consistent, high-grade material every week. Those partnerships helped us grow—and we grew with them.”
Building a Team, a Plant, and a Reputation
Brad didn’t just build a business; he built a team. What began as a solo operation soon evolved into a company with its own remanufacturing plant, a whole office team, and a staff of 50. Key to this growth has been Brad’s leadership style—equal parts hands-on and hands-off. He hires people he can trust, avoids micromanagement, and fosters an environment where everyone benefits when the company succeeds.
A robust profit-sharing plan, flexible work-from-home options, and open communication are all part of Prime Forest Product’s culture. “We’re in a people-first industry,” Brad says. “Take care of your team, and they’ll take care of the business.”
Transitioning to the Next Generation
As Prime Forest Products enters into the next chapter, Brad is leading a thoughtful and deliberate transition to his son, Lucas. Lucas, who studied at BCIT and worked hands-on in mills to understand production from the ground up, is now developing relationships with sawmills and key accounts.
“Lucas doesn’t just know the theory,” Brad says. “He’s got sawdust in his veins.”
Letting go of something you have poured so much of your life and energy into isn’t easy, but Brad has been intentional in transferring knowledge by bringing Lucas to key meetings, encouraging him to lead conversations, and empowering him to build his own relationships. “Part of it is letting go,” he admits. “But that’s how you pass on experience. You let them do it.”
The goal is an effortless and seamless handoff. “Eventually, I’ll step away and nothing will skip a beat,” Brad adds. “Lucas is doing a great job, and I’m confident he’ll lead this company into its next era.”
Looking Ahead
When asked what he’s most proud of, Brad doesn’t point to revenue or equipment. He points to the people around him. “It’s the team we’ve built—watching the business evolve into what it is today. That’s what I’m proud of.”
Prime Forest Products now stands as a proven partner for manufacturers across North America, especially with window and door producers who depend on reliable, high-quality industrial lumber. The company’s foundation of relationships, craftsmanship, and forward-thinking leadership continues to set it apart.
And with a new generation at the helm, the future of Prime Forest Products is looking pretty prime.
